Autocritique: a biography of the automobile object

There are currently over 1.2 billion cars on the planet - shaping our landscapes, our environments and our lifestyles. The automobile is a complex object, which accumulates and tells our own stories, but also expresses itself through its forms or in the ramifications of our technical, economic and ideological systems. The “Autocritique: a biography of the automobile object” line brings together, through shared critical documentation, a collection of stories and articles to prepare the ground for a debate in which design could play a part: how can we reappropriate the discourse on the automobile object in an attempt to debate it? How can we use this diversity of stories to rebuild critical fictions? This research project is putting together a corpus of texts and images, both recent and old, that attempt to retrace what influences - or could influence - design thinking. It takes the form of a general biography of the automobile object, and raises the essential question of technical democracy as a major political challenge of the ecological transition.
